Help with IRS and Oklahoma tax letters

Send a photo of the letter. We tell you what it means, the deadline, and what it will cost to answer.

A letter from the IRS is stressful, but most are routine. At Norman Tax Consulting we read the letter first, then tell you plainly what it is asking for. Many need one reply with documents. A few need more work, and those get a fee in writing before anything starts.

Letters we see most in Norman

  • The CP2000 says income on a W2 or 1099 did not match your return. Brokerage sales and forgotten side jobs are the usual cause.
  • The CP14 is a first notice of a balance due. It is followed by CP501, CP503 and CP504 if it goes unpaid.
  • Letter 1058 or LT11 is a final notice of intent to levy, with 30 days to ask for a hearing.
  • The CP59 or a related notice means the IRS has no return on file for a year.
  • Oklahoma Tax Commission letters cover adjustments to Form 511 or a balance due on the state side.

What we do after reading it

  1. Pull your IRS account and wage and income transcripts with your permission.
  2. Compare them to the return that was filed and find the real cause.
  3. Write the reply with documents, or prepare the missing or amended return.
  4. Request penalty relief where it applies, and set up a payment plan if you owe.
  5. Follow up until the account shows the issue closed.

Penalty relief and payment plans

The IRS will often remove a first late filing or late payment penalty if your record for the three prior years is clean. The details are on its penalty relief page. If you owe and cannot pay all at once, an installment agreement spreads it out. Interest keeps running, but further penalties are smaller than when nothing is in place.

What this kind of work costs

Answering a single letter with documents is a small job. Full resolution work, such as several unfiled years, a payment plan and penalty requests together, usually starts around $2,500 in this market. You get the number in writing after we read the letter. The cost guide has the full price table.

Bigger cases

If you owe a very large amount, are facing a levy on a business account, or the case involves fraud penalties, you may need a firm that does only tax resolution or a tax attorney. We will tell you that on the first call rather than take a case we should not.

Clients in Lexington and Slaughterville often call about held refunds and missed quarterly payments. The town pages cover both.

Questions about IRS letters

I got a CP2000. Do I have to pay what it says?

Not always. A CP2000 is a proposal, not a bill. It says income reported to the IRS does not match your return. If they missed your cost basis or a deduction, we answer with documents and the amount often drops.

Can a penalty be taken off?

Often. The IRS offers first time abatement for failure to file and failure to pay penalties if you had a clean record for the prior three years. Reasonable cause, like a serious illness, can also work.

How long do I have to answer a letter?

The deadline is printed on the letter, usually 30 to 60 days. A notice of intent to levy gives you 30 days to request a hearing, so that one cannot wait.

Can you talk to the IRS for me?

Yes. With a signed Form 2848, a CPA or enrolled agent can call and write to the IRS on your behalf, so you do not have to.
